Project Details
The completed shopping centre created enormous interest
within the architectural community, for the designs and
type of material selected for the floor finish. It has
already been copied by other architectural practices for
other unassociated projects. Although not instantly apparent,
a repeating pattern of different sized tiles has been
used to create a dynamic floor finish to bring vibrancy
to the malls between the shops. In addition, inlaid into
the tiles are patterns that were waterjet cut off-site,
which in themselves add a further dimension to the overall
design.
Fixing Methods
To maintain speed of laying and avoid the need to continually
refer to the pattern layout, stainless steel grids were
made to exactly match the pattern. Approximately one square
metre in size, these were simply lifted out once the tiles
had been placed, then moved to the next pattern repeat
position. By adopting this “Grid' template method,
we were able to complete our work well within the project
constraints.
